The Capitol Steps: What to Expect When You're Electing

  • September 18, 2016 at 7:00 pm

Merchant Hall

Before you head to the polls to elect our 45th president, join us for the rocking and roasting local institution, The Capitol Steps. For more than 30 years, The Capitol Steps has traveled the nation satirizing the most serious of subjects: politics. Founded by Hill staffers in 1981, their blend of humor and musical comedy leaves both sides of the aisle rolling in laughter. Absolutely no one is safe from their lampooning -from Bernie Sanders belting out a show tune, to Donald Trump rocking out, to a Hillary Clinton stand-up routine. The Capitol Steps presents renditions from their current review, including Mitt Romney's ballad "Hello, Is It Mitt You're Looking For?," "If There Were No Rich Men" from Senator Sanders, and Clinton's "Deleter of the Facts." No matter who or what is in the headlines, you can bet The Capitol Steps will prove that if you are not part of the solution, you're probably running for President. "Its political satire brings chuckles…rave reviews…guffaws…and bipartisan grins all around." (The Wall Street Journal)

New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players: H.M.S. Pinafore

  • May 4, 2017 at 8:00 pm

Merchant Hall

Sail the shining waters as the H.M.S. Pinafore embarks on a journey of humor and mischief in Gilbert & Sullivan's famous comic operetta about finding love on the high seas. The levity of musical theater meets the extravagance of opera in a satirical musical production that lovingly pokes fun at rigid Victorian class distinctions. Romantic sailors, sisters, cousins, and aunts sing and dance across this fanciful British naval vessel. Love finds its way aboard as the captain's daughter falls for an ordinary sailor, despite her father's plan for a more refined suitor. First performed in London in 1878, this classic has delighted audiences on both sides of the Atlantic for more than 130 years. The playful score includes many popular tunes such as "I'm called Little Buttercup," "I am the Monarch of the Sea," "We Sail the Ocean Blue," and the rousing full ensemble anthem "For He Is an Englishman." Hailed by New York magazine as "the leading custodian of the [Gilbert & Sullivan] classics," the New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players brings energetic singing, live orchestration, dynamic choreography, and an elaborate set based on Gilbert's own drawings. Join us for hijinks on the high seas in the grand style of Gilbert & Sullivan!
