Summer Performances for Young Audiences

Embark on a tour of Latin American dance with the Latin Ballet of Virginia. Learn more about the steps and history of dances like the Salsa, Merengue, and Bachata along with Flamenco and Capoeira. Discover the origin of these popular dances in this lively celebration of Latin America’s rich cultural heritage that is steeped in tradition, rhythm, music, and dance.

This performance is partially supported by the Virginia Commission for the Arts and National Endowment for the Arts.

$25 adults; $20 seniors, students (12 years and older), and active and retired military; $15 children (12 years and younger)

*Sensory-friendly performances are designed to create a performing arts experience that is welcoming to all people with autism or with other disabilities that create sensory sensitivities. 

Accommodations for the July 22 performance will include:

  • Lower sound level, especially for startling or loud sounds;
  • Lights remain on at a low level in the theater during the performance; 
  • A reduction of strobe lighting or lighting focused on the audience;
  • Patrons are free to talk and leave their seats during the performance;
  • Designated quiet areas within the theater;
  • Space throughout the theater for standing and movement;
  • Hylton Center staff trained to be inviting and accommodating to families' needs.

Buchanan Partners Art Gallery

Marti Patchell expresses her passion for gardening and the beauty of nature through an exploration of her interest in the drawn line. Botanical Fusion features works illustrating the intricate layering of formal elements found in the natural world around us. Reflecting upon her “up close” encounters, the artist presents works including monoprint etchings and collages that encourage the viewer to dive deeper into the beauty found in the “power of nature’s display.”

Gallery Reception: Thursday, August 3 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. featuring wines by Stone Tower Winery.

Serious Play Conference

The Serious Play Conference, now in its 7th year, is a leadership conference for professionals who embrace the idea that games can revolutionize learning. Speakers, who come from all parts of the globe, share their experience creating or using games in the corporation, classroom, healthcare institution, government and military and offer tips on how to move game-based education programs ahead.

At Serious Play, attendees listen, share and participate actively in informal sessions dedicated to the discussion of the future of serious games.

Technical Theater Boot Camp 

  • July 24, 2017 - July 28, 2017

Have you ever wondered what happens behind the scenes of performing arts venue? Does the world of production hold a unique appeal?  This summer, the Hylton Center will offer a one-week technical theater training “boot camp” led by professional Hylton Center staff and guest instructors to learners ages 16 and up. (Ages 14-15 with recommendation)

Fee: $300

Participants will learn:

  • Essential Skills of technical production
  • Basics of stage lighting, carpentry, rigging, and fly system operation
  • Sound equipment operation for reinforcement and effects
  • Good practices for safe and efficient stage crew operations

This hands-on class concludes with the students handling all technical requirements for performances of Dance and Popular Music, before a live audience.

Successful completion of Technical Theater Boot Camp I earns a Certificate of Technical Theater Training.  

General Information:

  • Classes include five 4-hour sessions with one 15-minute break daily; long pants and closed-toe shoes are required; work gloves recommended
  • Classes are led by professional George Mason University Hylton Center and College of Visual and Performing Arts Production staff
