Lecture: Surprising Sicily

Lifelong Learning Institute Lecture

  • October 4, 2017 at 1:30 pm

Gregory Family Theater

Speaker: Joyce Johnston

Presented by the Lifelong Learning Institute, Manassas

Who would have guessed that one medium-sized island could hold volcanic stairs of fire, fantasy-inspired gardens, Moorish palaces and whole towns built of golden stone? You can experience the highest- ranked gelato in Italy and the best preserved Greek temples in the world. Sicily even offers locations from the Odyssey and day trips to Apollo’s birthplace, which also hosts what may be the world’s oldest synagogue. Ruled by seven different cultures over the centuries, the island combines the best from them all.

Joyce Johnston’s lifetime of travel as an Army brat has given her a love of unexplored places and a taste for adventure. Now retired from public school teaching after 37 years, she has extended her love of diverse cultures to her multicultural students at George Mason University and to frequent travel with her husband Craig. In previous LLI Experience Buffets, Joyce shared her experiences in the cities of Eastern Europe and the beauties of life above the Arctic Circle. Now she is delighted to add the highlights of one of the most surprising places she has ever visited.
